Frequently Asked Questions

What makes hardware wallets more secure than software wallets?

Hardware wallets provide superior security because they store your private keys offline in a dedicated device, completely isolated from the internet. This "air-gapped" approach means your keys are never exposed to potentially compromised computers or smartphones. Even if you connect the device to an infected computer, the private keys remain secure within the device's protected memory.

Software wallets, by contrast, store your keys on internet-connected devices, making them potentially vulnerable to malware, keyloggers, and remote attacks. Our hardware devices also incorporate secure elements—specialized chips designed to resist physical tampering and side-channel attacks.

How do I back up my hardware wallet?

All our hardware wallets generate a recovery seed (typically 12 or 24 words) during initial setup. This seed is the cryptographic backup of all the private keys that will be generated on your device. You should write this seed on the provided recovery cards and store them in a secure location.

For additional protection, consider using our Steel Recovery Backup product, which allows you to permanently store your recovery phrase on fireproof and waterproof stainless steel plates. Never store your recovery seed digitally (no photos, no text files, no emails), as this defeats the security purpose of a hardware wallet.

What happens if I lose my hardware wallet?

If you lose your hardware wallet, your funds remain secure as long as no one has your PIN code. To regain access to your cryptocurrency, you can purchase a new hardware wallet (even from a different manufacturer) and use your recovery seed to restore all your accounts and funds.

This recovery process works because the seed phrase is a standardized way to generate the same private keys across different devices. This is why properly backing up and securing your recovery seed is absolutely critical—it's your ultimate backup for accessing your funds.

Are firmware updates safe?

Yes, firmware updates are an important part of maintaining your device's security. Our updates are cryptographically signed, meaning your device will only accept genuine firmware from SecureKeySolutions. The device verifies this signature before installing any update.

We recommend keeping your device updated to benefit from security improvements and new features. During updates, your private keys remain secure in the device's protected storage. As a precaution, we always recommend having your recovery seed accessible before performing updates, though problems are extremely rare.

Which cryptocurrencies are supported?

Our devices support a wide range of cryptocurrencies, with our flagship SecureVault Pro supporting over 1,500 different assets. This includes major cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Litecoin, and Cardano, as well as all ERC-20 tokens and many other blockchain standards.

We regularly add support for new cryptocurrencies through firmware updates. You can check the full list of supported cryptocurrencies on the specifications page for each device. If you need support for a specific cryptocurrency, please contact our support team to check compatibility or to request future integration.
